For Christmas, I received a lovely new set of speakers from Santa Claus. Luckily, I bought them at a lower price than they presently are: $80. For that price, a set of 2.1 speakers that can output 200 Watts is pretty good. I’ve been happy with them since the first day i got them. The subwoofer is a hefty 40 pounds and outputs an amazing bass.

•March 22, 2009 • 2 CommentsAbout a week ago, my UPS went out on me and must have created a surge back into the computer. This shorted something out inside of my computer. The weird thing is that everything turns on: all of the fans spin, hard drive turns on, and cd drives turn on. The motherboard does not post and I am not sure if the problem is either with the motherboard or the processor. I tried out a friend’s processor but he told me he always had issues with it, so i cannot know if the second processor is giving me a false positive. The second processor does the same as the first: everything spins but no post. I would have to assume that the motherboard is at fault and i think i’ll be buying a new. The link at the bottom is the one I have chosen as a replacement. It seems to be a good one. I wonder if anyone has any comments on it.

Ubuntu vs Fedora
•June 23, 2008 • Leave a CommentTwo Linux distributions that have made their mark in the open source community. Both are based on two great operating systems that basically established what Linux is today: Debian and Red Hat Linux. Each one has its pro’s and it’s cons. I’m grown accustomed to Ubuntu, but I don’t mind trying out other distributions to see how well off they are and how different they have become.

Customize Your iPod: IpodLinux or RockBox?
•March 24, 2008 • Leave a CommentThis past week I stumbled across two open source programs that are made to be installed on iPods and other media devices. These two programs are iPodLinux and Rockbox. They are both great programs for customization on your iPod and for doing more than the closed source programs let you. The only problem with these programs is that at the moment, not all of the devices are compatible.

Intense Software: Compiz Fusion
•March 15, 2008 • 3 CommentsCompiz Fusion is naturally one of those things that people want to have. Eye-candy like this is one of the main reasons people are attracted to Windows Vista, but it is actually one of the main downfalls to all operating systems. Eye-candy is just what is it is, something pretty that we all like to see. The reason something like this is a downfall for operating systems is that it takes a lot of resources to produce the wanted effect. Not all computers are capable of running this type of program and those that do meet the minimum requirements find that their Processor is constantly running at a high speed.

Xubuntu Webserver: Would You Like Without A Head?
•February 5, 2008 • 2 CommentsMy latest project has been to install a webserver into a computer that is not exactly new but not too old to not function properly. Since I’m designing my website at the moment, I turned that computer into a webserver. Out of all the distributions that I could put in it, I went with Xubuntu, just like I did with my external hard drive. I chose this because of the lower amount of resources that the Desktop Environment extracts and the reliability of the Ubuntu community. Now, if you are wondering what I mean by the posts’ title, I decided to turn it into a server that did not need a monitor, mouse, or keyboard.

Slackware: Another Great One
•February 2, 2008 • 2 CommentsThis one was mentioned to me in a comment. Apparently I missed mentioning the oldest distribution that is still being maintained. Slackware seems like a good distribution, though I have never used it. I plan on trying it out after I have gotten my web server up and running, writing a post about it so those who would like to know how it did it can read about, and creating my web site.
Now, Slackware is a distribution that is a bit different from the rest. The first difference is that it’s packages are not .deb or .rpm, in fact, they are .tgz (gzipped tarballs). This adds its own uniqueness as it is easier to know where exactly the files are being place, and not be out of the loop like you would be installing a .deb or .rpm.

Comments: Have any?
•January 31, 2008 • 1 CommentRemember, if you have any questions about anything I say in one of the posts or if you’d like me to answer any questions you may have regarding any of the Linux distributions, ask away in a comment. Don’t be shy!
